Walter de la Mare, 1873-1956Walter de la Mare's poetry is absolutely delightful. His poems especially lend themselves to narration by acting.
One family who read de la Mare's poetry shares: After my children narrated a de la Mare poem, we would often discuss its meaning, particularly with his poems that are full of metaphor and/or symbolism. The children memorized and recited "Unstooping" while acting out the part of the lion, the bear and the men. When we read "Mrs. Earth," we tried to find examples of the elements mentioned. After reading "I Can't Abear," we took one of our field trip days to visit a local cobbler or butcher. I suspect that de la Mare spent a lot of time outdoors, observing the planets and the plant and animal kingdoms. |
